So for a system of 6-8 cameras, is a branded NVR “good enough” if the system is just for an average home use? In looking around I found a unit by Samsung that feature wise looks pretty nice. If I was building a mega cam system, the PC built unit would be no question. My question is about initial cost to build and cost to operate, factoring in the size of the system. Not that I am afraid of building, as I have always built my home PCs and family’s PCs. Maybe the USB recorder thing can be tricked into treating a USB male-male cable running into my PC as a flash drive? Unless I can find a Github repo or something that already does that hackish workaround I hypothesized about, or something better than that. Even at almost half off on Prime Day it isn't an appealing product. I bought this 90% as a cheap webcam and 10% for the security functionality so I'm probably just gonna return it.

If I really want to see it on my desktop screen without attaching my phone via an HDMI adapter I guess I could emulate Android and run the Android version of the Blink app from it, but then I have to figure out how to write my own code to get Windows to treat a portion of the emulator's window as a webcam feed so I can pass it along to Messenger or Skype or whatever. I know the audio quality is bad, I don't care, I have plenty of other mics I can use - just let me plug the USB cable this thing already has into my PC and have it output the same video data. It clearly has the hardware capability to stream video, you can watch a live feed from your phone even without a cloud subscription or their fancy overpriced glorified USB port thing.
